A few photos have come in of a completely inspiring booth at this year’s Local Biz Expo. George Walker (Dovetail Carpentry), Bogdan Slominski (Delta B77 Electric), Jason Luery (Painting Improvements) and Yvonne Greene (Why Not Show Off – Home Staging and Design) pulled together to build a booth representing all four businesses. The result was jaw-dropping and we would like to share some of the photos with you …

Students write ‘furry fables’ to raise funds for Durham Humane Society

DURHAM — As soon as Lori Lowes’ students heard the story about the fire that destroyed the Humane Society of Durham Region building last December, they wanted to do something to help the agency get back on its feet.

“I really want my class to focus on things that are happening in their own community to help out in any way that they can and when I told them the story, they immediately wanted to know what they could do,” said Ms. Lowes, who teaches Grades 4 and 5 at R.H. Cornish Public School in Port Perry.

That opportunity presented itself in Furry Fables, a competition that has been launched this month by Squid Press, a Brooklin-based publishing company.

Durham students from kindergarten to Grade 12 are encouraged to submit poems, stories and illustrations surrounding the theme of pets. Entries will be judged with winning submissions being compiled into a book with proceeds from sales going to the Humane Society.

“They were very enthusiastic right from the get-go to do this and especially when it’s open-ended like this, it allows them to take off on their own and make it their own so they’re quite happy to be involved,” Ms. Lowes said.

Squid Press works with schools, churches and charities in the community to raise funds for important causes through creative means involving publishing.

“I wanted to have a wide variety of entries from four-year-olds up to 18-year-olds because I think it appeals to everyone to write their own story or poem as a way of expressing themselves,” said owner Lesley Kelz, adding older youth even have the option of submitted comics or graphic novels.

Judging will be based on grade level quality, creativity and originality and organizers are hoping to select several winners from each age group to balance out the final book.

“Right now we’re hoping to spread the word so we do get as many entries as possible and we have lots to pick through and make a really great book that’s a hot seller to raise lots of funds for the Humane Society,” said Oshawa resident Tammy Gay who is assisting Ms. Kelz with the fundraiser.

Humane Society staff are currently working to raise $1.5 million to construct a new shelter in Whitby and welcome any contributions from the community, shelter manager Ruby Richards said.

“I think it’s great to get the kids involved because a lot of schools have already held fundraisers for us and students have been very enthusiastic about starting their own individual fundraisers or finding some way to continue helping us,” she said.

“This way, if they put (an entry) into the book, it’s something they could get back in return as well — something that they’ll have forever as a memorial of what they’ve done for us.”

Deadline for all entries is set for Friday, Oct. 30 and full contest details can be found at www.squidpress.ca/pages/furryfables.htm

Improve your health with thorough cleaning! October 26, 2009

Dust contains moulds that often grow together with different bacteria. According to the Education Safety Association of Ontario, breathing airborne particles of mould can cause numerous kinds of health problems including nasal, throat, eye and skin irritations, coughing and wheezing. Bacteria are a common thing that help to spread viruses and cause many other health conditions such as: allergies, headaches, fatigue, nausea, depression, skin rashes and sore throats (The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases).

Mold is dangerous; not only may it cause health problems; it is a living organism that will destroy anything it is growing on, including furniture, cupboards, carpets and even walls.  If you notice any sign of mould growing in your home, you must remove it immediately with thorough cleaning.

In addition to carrying mould, dust that travels in the air can also carry germs and other harmful bacteria. Studies conducted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found that indoor exposure to harmful air pollutants could be up to one hundred times greater than outdoors. Regular cleaning will help decrease the amount of dust floating in your home.

Being thorough is essential as bacteria are not always visible with the naked eye. Bacteria are everywhere, in the carpet, sofa, walls, door knob, washrooms, and especially in the kitchen. Special attention should be taken on cleaning the kitchen because it is a good breeding place for bacteria.

Help keep you and your family safe and healthy with these simple steps:

  • Clean regularly
  • Use a good disinfected cleaner that kills germs
  • Don’t forget to wipe down handles to cupboards, fridges, and doors
  • Get every spot, clean underneath furniture in the corners and inside appliances
  • Be mindful of cross contamination, especially in the kitchen
  • Always ensure your cleaning tools are often disinfected
  • Get help if you need it

Picture Perfect! October 20, 2009

Although the thought of having your picture taken can rate up there with having a root canal, there are ways to make the process fun and enjoyable. So in choosing a photographer, rather then picking up the yellow pages, flipping to PHOTOGRAPHER, closing your eyes, randomly pointing at the page while saying “Eenie, meenie, minie, moe,” take a few minutes to read through the following suggestions:”

  • Talk to family, friends, and co-workers for recommendations. Word of mouth is often the best way to find a photographer. Ask to see prints and albums to view the quality of work.
  • Surf the web and browse photography sites to find a compatible style. If the photographer has profile page and/or picture, take time to check it out as it will give you a feel for the photographer’s personality.
  • Bookmark any sites that have visually appealing images paying attention to quality: Are the pictures clear? Are the images well composed? Are the camera angles flattering? Do the skin tones look natural? Do the people look good in the pictures? Do the pictures reflect your sense of style?
  • Prepare a checklist of questions to ask the photographer(s): What is the length of a photo session? Where will the photo session take place? What is included in the package/price? Are full-resolution digital images included in the price? What is the payment plan? How will the images be presented for selection after the shoot (proofs, online gallery, etc)? Are specialty products (coffee table art books, photo cards, photo bags, etc.) available?
  • Contact various selected photographers on the phone to get a greater sense of their personality and to determine your comfort level with them. As well be sure to discuss your ideas and vision for the photo session.
  • Choose a photographer whose style and work you love. If price is an issue, consider saving for that photo session now. Photography is an investment that will only appreciate in the years to come.

Local Biz Expo – Wednesday, October 28th from 10a.m. to 8p.m.,
General Motors Centre in Oshawa

This year OSEB is partnering with the Durham Region Local Training Board to bring you a bigger, better and more exciting trade show. Featuring this year’s past graduates along with excellent Government resources you may not be familiar with, it’s truly a year of branching out and growing from past experiences! There are many more details but right now we’re looking for kind souls who would be willing to give up some time to come out and volunteer that day. You can help for the full day or any portion of the day. Thank you in advance, we think you will find the show beneficial and interesting.

If this is you, please contact Susan Legare by email before Monday, October 26th, 5p.m. at inquiries@momentsthatshine.com and she’ll pass along more details. You can also call the office at 905-668-4141 to speak with Bev and she’ll pass the info along.

OSEB Trade Show Marketing Drive – Help Us!

We are happy to inform you that the Trade Show advertising is gaining momentum; and during these final days approaching the event a huge marketing drive is now on to ensure the success and promotion of YOUR show. With this in mind you will find below the official ‘Local Biz Expo’ Advertising Poster (put together by Kokoriyo Printing and On Top Marketing), and we are encouraging all recipients to self promote the show by downloading 10 posters each and placing them in areas of high visibility. Also forward the information on to all of those in your local Durham e-mail address book, encouraging them to come out and, if you are a participant, support you at your first trade show unveiling. If you are a past grad planning to attend, kindly help us out by doing the same!

There will be much to see and do during the day and many businesses will be offering trade show specials, discounts and of course individual booth raffle prizes. Additionally there are total show prizes of lap top computers and other worthwhile prizes. If we all make the effort to do this we can expand trade show attendance and cash in on the opportunity for you all to have more exposure to your products and services.

Also below is a 2009 Guest Pass for you to forward on to your contacts. While there is no fee to attend the Trade Show, this still personalizes your emails to others and helps us keep track of where all our attendees heard about us.

Remember good marketing is the key to success, so help us ensure yours by taking the time to self promote this fabulous show.

Social Media Links

You’ve obviously found the blog … spread the word about it! If you have any special offers you would like displayed, please contact Susan at inquiries@momentsthatshine.com. Time permitting we may also add some spotlights on participating vendors. If this peaks your interest, contact Susan. Make sure you watch out for all those great business tips coming in. So far we have a few we’ll be popping up in the next week and we would love to add yours, too!

We currently have a Facebook event for Local Biz Expo that we would love for you to check out. If you already are a member of ‘Essential Communications – OSEB Circle!‘ the invite should have reached you. If you have yet to be a part of this group and you’re on Facebook, please join us! Not only will you receive future Facebook invites but you will also be able to stay in touch with other OSEBers throughout the year. You can also visit the event directly at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2348533501#/event.php?eid=159510340100 to reply on your own or add Susan Légaré as a friend and she will invite you.

As some of you know, we are working alongside the Durham Region Training Board for the show this year. You can visit their site at http://www.drltb.com/ for even more info. They also have a couple spots on Facebook for you to look at which are linked on our event page.

Please get involved everyone! We’re very excited at the magnitude of the show this year. It’s bigger, better and we’re hoping for a HUGE attendance partially because of you!

Thanks,

Peter
